“2019 Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition” held its grand opening today at the Taipei World Trade Center, where the Ministry of National Defense has set up 5 exhibition areas, allowing the attending citizens to understand the military preparedness achievement as the Armed Forces are shifting towards a more technological and modernized approach.

The opening ceremony was held in the morning, and was co-hosted by guests including President Tsai Ing-wen, James C. F. Huang, chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, William Brent Christensen, director of the American Institute in Taiwan, and Chang Guan-chung, Vice Minister of National Defense. A total of 160 manufacturers have attended the exhibition, with more than 800 booths, which has transcended from the scale of previous exhibition. President Tsai also went to the Ministry of National Defense Pavilion, Taiwan Aerospace Industry Association Area, and the space technology industry area to observe and understand the research and development achievement for relevant aerospace industry and national defense technology, as well as witness the profound capability to the development of the national defense technology industry for our country.

During her oration, President Tsai Ing-wen stated that the aerospace industry is a remarkably complex high tech industry, which requires tremendous resources, as well as the synergy between the government and the public, hence the new government incorporated the national defense aerospace industry into the 5+2 Industrial Transformation Plan upon taking office, and strives to enhance the momentum of the public through the power of the government.

President Tsai pointed out that the government has been gradually elevating the technology regarding autonomous national defense for the past three years beginning from the Indigenous Fighter Aircraft Program, and not only has it retained orders within the country, which preserves the energy of aerospace research and development, but also laid down the foundation to the future of the aerospace industry. Through the provision of research and development resources, the government also assists the industry to introduce critical technology and establish autonomous aerospace and national defense supply chain, which has incorporated more than 100 domestic supply chain manufacturers so far, and established international relationship with multiple foreign partners, as well as obtained more than 20 aerospace certifications.

In addition, President Tsai stated that another focus of this exhibition lies on drones. As technology advances, the application of drones becomes extensive, such as photography, mapping, disaster surveying, and pesticide sprinkling. In order to encourage the research and development of drones, the government strives to provide a better environment through autonomous and amended relevant regulations, so as to facilitate the development of drones. President Tsai believes that in the future, whether it is the aerospace industry or drones, both will continue to expand competitiveness, as long as each sector continues to work closely with one another, and bringing a more prosperous development while marching towards the global stage.
